Police in Sussex have detained a man on suspicion of false imprisonment and arson following a fire in Bognor Regis.

Multiple fire crews were called to an address on The Steyne this morning after a fire started during a police incident.

Officers had been responding to reports of a man allegedly breaking in to a property there when flames broke out.

Breathing apparatus and hose reel jets were used to extinguish the flames as nearby residents were evacuated from their homes.

A Sussex Police spokesperson said:

“Several surrounding properties have been evacuated and nearby residents are advised to keep their windows closed.

“People are urged to avoid the area while emergency services work at the scene.”

No injuries have so far been reported.
