Appeal to find home for RSPCA's 'loneliest rabbit'
Hickory has been cared for by teams in Sussex for more than a year
RSPCA teams in Sussex have launched a special appeal to find their longest stay rabbit a loving home.
Hickory came into the animal centre, based in Patcham in Brighton, on August 11th last year - and has now been there for 381 days.
Hickory arrived with his parents who have now been rehomed, after their previous owner could not cope.
Hazel Tarrant, the RSPCA's head of small animals and wildlife at Brighton, said:
“He came to us as a young rabbit but is now a fully grown adult who likes to have a stretch in the run, and loves his greens and treats.
“He has a lovely personality, we cannot understand why there has been so little interest in him.
“We hope by launching this appeal someone will spot him and offer him the home he deserves.”
The RSPCA in Brighton is full with rabbits at the moment with 17 in their care and more waiting to come in.
RSPCA rabbit welfare expert Dr Jane Tyson said:
“Sadly, this comes as the RSPCA is braced for a summer of suffering. We see a rise of animal cruelty over the summer months with 245 reports of cruelty every day.
“And with the increase in pet ownership and the cost of living crisis putting a strain on people’s finances, the charity fears we may see more animals coming into our care at a time when rehoming has slowed.
“Rabbits can live for a long time and can be costly, they need much more than just a hutch at the end of the garden - they need space, companionship and enrichment to live happy and healthy lives.
“If you do feel able to commit to a pet or feel you could take a rabbit in for fostering please contact your local RSPCA centre to help.”
