Animals including pigs, cows and turkeys have been freed from a barn following a fire on a farm near Horsham.

Crews were called to the scene just off Five Oaks Road in Slinfold at around 9.30pm on Thursday night (December 10th).

They remained there until around 4am on Friday morning.

Livestock was moved from the building into surrounding areas while firefighters fought the flames.

A spokesperson for West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service said:

“We were alerted to reports of a barn on fire at a farm off the A264 Five Oaks Road at Slinfold at around 9.30pm on Thursday (December 10).

"Joint Fire Control mobilised two fire engines to the scene from Horsham Fire Station, and a third from Billingshurst, along with the Water Carrier from Petworth.

“Upon arrival crews found a barn well alight with cylinders and vehicles involved and livestock housed in adjoining barns.

"The Incident Commander requested a further three appliances, which were mobilised from Crawley, Henfield and Steyning along with an additional Water Carrier from Burgess Hill and the Incident Command Unit from Haywards Heath.

“The service’s Technical Rescue Unit was also mobilised to help in the moving of livestock from the adjoining barns to a safe location.

"The cylinders were safely removed and part of the building affected by the fire was extinguished using firefighting jets and ground monitors."

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
