Woking school celebrates World Book Day
Greenfield School has been putting on events all week to mark the event
Schools across the country have been celebrating World Book Day, with Greenfield School in Woking being no exception.
The school has held reading-inspired events since Monday. Activities have included a story-in-a-shoebox competition and a visit from a renowned author, Jemma Tatt.
On the official World Book Day, staff and pupils alike dressed up in costumes, with many costumes inspired by their favourite characters
Despite the day going ahead at Greenfield, many other schools have had to reschedule their World Book Days due to industrial action.
Head Of English, Christina Skipior, explained why World Book Day, and specifically reading, is so important.
"Reading is fundamental for everything."
"Reading is fundamental for everything. All subjects are based on knowledge, on a vocabulary.
"if the children can't access that, then they can't access any of the curriculum. So I'm really passionate about reading, I want the children to be that as well."
Christina also highlighted the range of characters that the pupils have dressed up as for the day.
"We have had a few Harry Potter's, my favourite was Harriet Potter. We've got some Mrs Trunchbulls (I won't mention the member of staff who's dressed up looking very scary!"
Pupils also enjoyed dressing up, with one pupil saying "For the past few years I've come in as different Alice in Wonderland characters."
Another pupil said "I'm reading a Series of Unfortunate Events, as well as tuck everlasting.
"A Series of Unfortunate Events is one of my favourite books, since a lot of the characters are living real life things that some people are also living."
