Woking residents invited to have their say on new rule aiming to prevent antisocial behaviour
The new Public Spaces Protection Order would make it a criminal offence to consume alcohol or certain substances within a defined area, if asked to stop by an authorised officer.
Woking residents are being invited to have their say on a new Public Spaces Protection Order.
The order would make it a criminal offence to consume alcohol or certain substances, in a defined area, if asked to stop by an officer.
It's part of an attempt to tackle alcohol and substance related antisocial behaviour in the town centre.
Over the past year, several areas have been identified where residents have experienced prolonged antisocial behaviour, with alcohol or substance abuse identified as an underlying cause.
The new order would allow the Council to apply restrictions to these areas with the aim of preventing antisocial behaviour.
Failure to comply with the rule could result in a Fixed Penalty Notice or fine of up to £1,000 on conviction.
The order would not prevent anyone from drinking alcohol responsibly within the defined area.
The proposed order would last for three years, after which there would be another reviewing taking into account the views of residents.
Cllr Debbie Harlow, Woking Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community Safety, said:
“Carefully considered measures can enable both Surrey Police and Woking Borough Council, along with partners, to take appropriate action on antisocial behaviour and act as an effective deterrent, having a positive effect on the community’s quality of life.
“To ensure the PSPO also considers the needs and freedoms of our residents and visitors, we are inviting anyone who wishes to comment on the proposals to participate in an interactive consultation on the new Woking Community Forum, where you can view and comment directly on a map of the proposed PSPO boundary".
Residents and people who work in Woking, as well as those responding on behalf of individuals who may be impacted, are invited to comment on the proposed order by visiting www.communityforum.woking.gov.uk/pspo-consultation
