Local Diwali celebrations are the latest to fall victim to the coronavirus pandemic.

The festivities were due to take place next month (14 November).

Woking Town Centre is normally a sea of colours as hundreds take part in the festival of light.

Previous years have seen lantern parades, music and live dance performances.

A spokesperson for Woking Borough Council said in a statement to GHR Surrey and East Hampshire:

"This year’s Celebrate Woking programme of events has been cancelled.

"Activities which use council resources or facilities will not be programmed or permitted during 2020.

"The only event that remains scheduled is Remembrance Sunday on 8 November 2020.

"Organisations impacted by this decision were made aware in March."

Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains across the globe and marks the victory of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance.
