South Farnham residents are being invited to help shape a bold new vision for one of the area’s largest proposed community spaces, as Waverley Borough Council launches a public consultation on plans to transform a former landfill site into a vibrant public park.

The 10-acre site, locally known as Brambleton Park, sits in the Weydon area just southeast of the town centre and is currently the focus of early planning for a major regeneration project, which could include a pump track, outdoor gym, café, children’s playground, and even a weekly parkrun.

An online survey is open now until 13 July 2025, giving residents a chance to contribute their ideas and priorities for the new green space. Paper copies of the survey are also available at Farnham Town Council offices on South Street.

Councillor Mark Merryweather, Waverley’s Portfolio Holder for Finance, Assets and Property, emphasised the importance of early community involvement: “We are still in the early stages of planning, but now is the ideal opportunity for local residents to have a direct influence on the future direction of the project. Transforming a former landfill into a sustainable community asset is no small task, and we’re eager to hear what people would like to see.”

The site, used as a landfill from the 1950s through to the 1980s, was sealed with a clay cap to contain the waste and reduce environmental impact. Before any development can begin, that protective cap will require significant repairs — a complex process that places the park’s projected opening in 2031.

Despite the long timeline, enthusiasm around the site’s potential is building. Councillor Kika Mirylees, Portfolio Holder for Community Services, Leisure and Equality, Diversity & Inclusion, said: “This site, roughly the size of six football pitches, has incredible potential to become a vibrant, accessible, and biodiverse green space. From fitness facilities to family areas and nature zones, it could offer real benefits for the entire community. We need residents’ input to help bring that vision to life.”

The results of the public consultation will feed into a formal business case. If approved by Waverley Borough Council’s Full Council, the project will move into design and planning stages, including more detailed community engagement and a future planning application.

Residents can take part in the consultation at the Waverley Borough Council’s website or visit Farnham Town Council to pick up a paper survey.
