Funding secured for new health facility in Weybridge
Construction work begins on site of former Weybridge Hospital
Funding has been secured to build a new, modern health facility on the site of the former Weybridge Hospital.
The milestone marks a significant step towards providing high-quality and accessible healthcare services for Weybridge and nearby communities.
Contractors, Willmott Dixon, have begun enabling works on the site. This includes installing perimeter hoarding, site offices, and carrying out minor demolition, with the main build phase expected to begin in early 2026.
The two-storey facility will house The Phoenix Family Practice alongside a breadth of services tailored to local needs. Planned features include maternity care, same-day urgent care, diagnostic services, and flexible spaces to adapt to evolving service delivery.
Estimated completion of the project is in Spring 2027.
The development is designed to reflect the NHS Long Term Plan, prioritising sustainable neighbourhood-based care and supporting residents with services closer to home.
Jack Wagstaff, Executive Director of Strategic Commissioning for Surrey Heartlands, emphasised the community collaboration behind the project: “This huge milestone has been made possible by the local community working in partnership with Surrey Heartlands Integrated Care Board, the Phoenix Family Practice, NHS Property Services and Elmbridge Borough Council.
“This long-awaited health facility will provide significant public benefits for the people of Weybridge and surrounding area with a sustainably accessed, high-quality scheme which will make a positive contribution towards replacing the community hospital lost in the fire of 2017."
Richard Poulter, Managing Director of Willmott Dixon in the South, said: “We are delighted to be working on this important community health facility for Weybridge.
“This project will provide community-focused care, bringing vital health and wellbeing services closer to where people live and work.
“Working collaboratively with NHS Property Services and all the project partners, we are committed to delivering a high-quality, sustainable building creating a modern healthcare environment that the Weybridge community can be proud of.”
Dr Graeme Wilding, GP Partner from The Phoenix Family Practice, acknowledged the challenges during construction: “After eight years the commencement of the rebuild is happening.
“While this is clearly excellent news, it does mean that we will be entering an extended period of disruption due to the building process with parking spaces at a premium."
He added that they look forward to moving into the new premises, which is expected around Spring 2027.
The site was handed over after the fire that destroyed Weybridge Hospital in 2017. Representatives from NHS Property Services, the Surrey Heartlands Integrated Care Board, and Elmbridge Borough Council have all contributed to planning and funding efforts for the replacement facility.
Community representatives and partners have celebrated the milestone, with Steve McCarthy, Chair of the Patient Participation Group at The Phoenix Family Practice, describing the development as "a fantastic milestone for our community.”
With construction entering its next stage, residents remain hopeful for completion of the purpose-built facility, which will provide a permanent home for the GP Practice and enhance healthcare services in the area.
