Surrey Environment Partnership's top tips for a waste free festive season

They're urging us all to recycle

Now that the paper has been torn off the presents, the Surrey Environment Partnership is encouraging people across the county to get recycling with their festive waste.

The group says recycling more of the right things makes a huge difference to the environment and is cheaper for our local councils to process than rubbish is.

Their top tips include:

  • Wrapping paper and cards that don't have glitter on, and aren't lined with foil and plastic, can often be recycled
  • Real Christmas trees can be taken to local community recycling centres, or replanted
  • Recycle all your cardboard food packaging
  • Empty, rinse and dry all plastic food and drink packaging before it goes in your recycling bin – and place all items loose (not bagged)
  • Recycle cardboard delivery and toy boxes and fold them down to make more room in your recycling bin
  • Plan food shops and part food in advance and freeze any cooked or uncooked food you didn't eat
  • Certain items, like clothes, small electricals and batteries must be recycled separately and can't go straight into your recycling bin
