Surrey Police issue warning over use of e-scooters
Currently it's not legal to use them on public roads or pavements.
Using an e-scooter in Surrey could cost you £300 and see you get six points on your driving licence.
The county's police force has issued a warning reminding people that they can't be used on pavements - nor are they road legal.
Whilst some hire schemes are being trialled in the UK there are none in Surrey, meaning you can only use them here on private land.
Officers in Woking are among those to have highlighted the issue, saying they will be stopping riders to “educate them about the legal requirements and safe use of e-scooters”.
In a statement Surrey Police said: “Currently, you can buy one but you can't ride it on a UK public road, cycle lane or pavement. Anyone who does is committing an offence.
“You could get a £300 fixed-penalty notice and, if you have one, six points on your driving licence.
“The only place an e-scooter can be used is on private land, with the permission of the landowner.
“At the moment, they are classified as Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs), so they're treated as motor vehicles and are subject to all the same legal requirements - MOT, tax, licensing and specific construction.”
