Surrey and Hampshire are being urged to take extra care this Bonfire Night - with more people expected to light fireworks at home.

After organised events were cancelled across Surrey and Hampshire due to the pandemic, and with the new lockdown starting today, fire services say they are preparing for a busier night than usual.

There are concerns diplays at home could lead to a rise in the number of severe burns or injuries, as some people handle fireworks for the first time.

Both Surrey and Hampshire Fire Rescue Services say we should "respect the fireworks, respect the emergency services and respect our neighbours."

Hampshire Fire Services say it is also to lessen the strain on the emergency services "during this challenging time"

Group Manager for Community Safety at Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, John Amos, said they are appealing for the public's support:

"Bonfire Night celebrations will be different this year, so we are asking the community for their support to help everyone enjoy the festivities safely.

"Remember, fireworks are explosives, so please avoid taking unnecessary risks and always follow the manufacturer's instructions and the Firework Code.

Please help us to protect the community by showing respect this Bonfire Night."

Surrey Police, meanwhile, say while lighting a bonfire at home is not illegal, it can cause a nuisance - which may be an offence.
