Researchers from the University of Surrey have found that how an individual’s outlook on ageing whether they see it as a time of growth or decline – is a significant correlate of their physical activity levels.

The research analysed data from 1,699 UK residents aged 50 and over, and found that positive views on ageing were linked to a greater likelihood of engaging in vigorous activity.

People with a higher number of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease were more likely to engage in vigorous physical activity if they had a more positive view of ageing.

The researchers propose that public health campaigns and interventions should support older people to maintain a positive attitude towards physical activity, even if they experience illness or long-term conditions.

Dr Serena Sabatini is the lead author for the research, and says that she hopes that the study can encourage positive change.

"Promoting more realistic views about older age can lead to greater physical activity and more positive self-perceptions"

Although the study was particularly targeted at older adults with a health condition, Dr Sabatini believes the takeaways from the research could be beneficial for everyone.

"Being physically active is good for everyone and especially people for people with chronic health conditions, it can help them manage their condition, it can help slow the progress and so on"

Dr Sabatini concluded by saying that she hopes that there can be a mentality shift towards exercising in later life

"The ultimate goal is to create a society where an active and engaged life is not only possible but expected, even in the presence of health challenges"
