University of Surrey Professor thinks Conservative Party Conference is in 'chaos'

It's not going to be a conference to remember for Liz Truss

The Conservative Party Conference is currently taking place in Birmingham following the government's u-turn on tax cuts and political experts think it'll weaken Liz Truss' government.

Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng axed the proposed tax cut on those who earn over £150,000 a year following backlash from the opposition and the public.

But Professor Amelia Hadfield doesn't think this will be enough to salvage the party's image during the conference.

She said: "Her first budget effectively is in tatters; the central policy has had to be ditched and it looks very publicly that the first party conference from Liz Truss as Prime Minister is full of holes.

"It’s descending into chaos and she’s going to finish the conference weaker."

However, Hadfield believes this isn't the beginning of the end for the Prime Minister but instead she's in a very strong position.

"Ironically she’s weakened temporarily, she’s pretty bulletproof until the next general election because the Conservative Party just can’t replace her now, not after the debacle over Boris Johnson," the Professor said.

"She’s weak now and got the dead woman walking sign around her neck but she’s pretty strong. That doesn’t mean invulnerable, but she’s got to make far better decisions."
