As high temperatures persist across Surrey and East Hampshire a thunderstorm warning has been issued.

The yellow alert goes up at 1pm today (20 July) and is in place until midnight, covering all of our area.

The Met Office says some places will miss the storm - but others could get torrential rain, lightning, hail and gusty winds.

It warns of the chance of up to 60mm of rainfall within one to two hours.

It comes as highs of at least 30°C are forecast, with lows staying in the twenties through to late tonight.

The Met Office's five day forecast for Surrey and East Hampshire:

Today:

A dry and sunny start across the region. However there is a risk of heavy thundery showers developing for the afternoon, with hail and gusty winds possible. Mostly very warm or hot, but cooler towards the east coast. Maximum temperature 31 °C.

Tonight:

Any heavy thundery showers only slowly dying out during the evening. Then a dry night with long clear spells. Very mild or warm overnight. Minimum temperature 16 °C.

Wednesday:

Another dry and sunny start, but with the risk once again of afternoon thundery showers. Very warm or hot, but cooler near the coast. Maximum temperature 31 °C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Sunny spells Thursday and Friday, risk of an afternoon shower on Thursday. Continuing very warm inland. Clouding over later Friday, with heavy thundery showers moving in overnight and on Saturday.
