Deliberate killing and maiming of swans in Surrey described as ‘horrendous, inconceivable acts of barbarity’
At least one was shot with an air rifle
An investigation is underway after two swans were deliberately killed and a further pair injured in Surrey.
Police are looking into several incidents at the Secretts Farm pond in Milford, including at least one involving an air rifle.
The Wildlife Foundation in Leatherhead, which is looking after one of the animals, has described what has happened as "horrendous".
A spokesperson for the charity added: "The surgery on the swan was successful and it is now recovering.
“There can be no place in a society that cares about wildlife for such inconceivable acts of barbarity."
Officers are conducting regular patrols in the area and have appealed for anyone with further information to come forward.
In a statement Surrey Police said: “It is believed that the swans were killed on 16 and 18 February, with two further swans being injured in the last couple of weeks.
“One of the swans is believed to have been injured with an air rifle and is being treated at a local animal hospital.
“We have carried out a thorough investigation and will pursue further enquiries should any new evidence come to light.”
