Today is the first day of the Government's advisory travel window for university students to return home for Christmas as part of coronavirus restrictions.

The seven day period is to allow for the safe travel of thousands heading back for the break, to limit the risk of the spread of infection.

The period ends on 9th December.

Universities around the country have been offering mass asymptomatic testing including the University of Surrey in Guildford.

Deborah Lawson leads its tactical response to Covid 19 - and tells us what happens if tests show they have the virus:

"Anybody who tests positive will have to self-isolate for 10 days, in accordance with the Government guidance.

"But this still allows everyone the time to travel home safely for the Christmas holidays, and to ensur that they protect their loved ones.

"If somebody tests negative, they'll have the opportunity to have a second test, if they wish, but they can leave university as long as they are travelling safely and that they comply with the Government guidance."

Deborah said students had been responding positively to the offer to get tested:

"Over four and a half students have already booked - and on Monday (30 November), the first day of testing, we were able to carry out over 650 tests."

She said they can carry out 1,000 tests a day with more than 40 staff setting up and delivering the test sites.

She said a slightly larger number of students than usual would be staying on campus this Christmas, due to the international travel restrictions.

Deborah said they will be supported throughout the period and will be offered activities and facilities, in a safe and Covid-secure manner.

Meanwhile, the Government is advising universities to stagger the return of students in the New Year over five weeks.

Universities are also being urged to continue offering online learning where possible.
