Places Leisure Camberley has been fitted with solar panels following a Sport England Swimming Pool Support grant of £165,000 that will help cut 28 tonnes of carbon a year, Surrey Heath Borough Council announced.

In addition to the roof top panels, the pool has also being given a new cover and the council has said it expects to save money over the course of the project.

It described the new eco measures as “another significant step on the road to net zero”

Councillor Morgan Rise, Surrey Heath Borough Council portfolio holder for net zero, environment and leisure was pleased the project had been completed and that the centre, which welcomed a record number of visitors last year, was going from “strength to strength”.

He added: “By investing in solar technology and fitting energy efficient pool covers, we are reducing our environmental impact and saving on energy costs – a crucial step towards a greener and more sustainable future for Surrey Heath.

As the number of people using this excellent facility continues to rise, we are proud to be helping to reduce its carbon footprint, and support its continued success.”

Cllr Rise also released a video alongside the news where he added: “This marks the end of a £165,000 project that’s been funded by Sports England and has been aimed at improving energy efficiency and decreasing energy usage here at Places Leisure Camberley.

Tony Penge of Places Leisure said the project was a showcase of the commitment to sustainability and our collective approach to reducing carbon emissions.

He added: “This is especially relevant within aquatic facilities, where energy demands are typically high due to the heating and ventilation required to maintain pool environments.”
