Student from Esher creates animation detailing grandfather's dementia journey
Imogen Bishop hopes that the animation will help others who are caring for a loved one with dementia.
A student from Surrey has produced an animation, detailing her grandfather's dementia story.
Imogen Bishop, from Esher, studies graphic communication and illustration at Loughborough University, spent three months on the animation sketches and video, for her final year project.
"It was a university brief, and I've had about three months to work on it. I started off with development work, research, doing research into the different stages that happen with Alzheimers and dementia.
"Then...I wrote the poem that's voiced over in the background and that was, including all the research that I've done about all the different stages. but also my personal experience with my grandad and how he coped with each stage he went through.
"After recording the voiceover I then animated it. This took about 2-3 weeks of intense animation, this was traditional animation so I drew it on my Ipad, but frame by frame - and then each frame moved slightly so it creates a moving sequence."
"I was sat at my computer 14 hours a day, for three weeks. It was so intense but it was worth it!"
Imogen hopes that the animation will help others caring for a loved one with dementia know that they are not alone, and reach out for dementia support.
She also explained that created the project in memory of her grandfather. She said that: "My grandad has always been a big inflynece in my creative career. As a child we used to go and spend summer holidays with my grandparents in Norfolk. He'd always treat me to pens, pencils, paper... I was always encouraged to be creative.
"I wanted to create a project in my final year in his memory, that was dedicated to them, and to say thank you for everything that you've helped me with over my life. Just something to bring everything together really."
