Jade Golder, from Cranleigh, will serve as First Mate in the upcoming Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, setting sail from Portsmouth on 31 August. She will support the professional Skipper in guiding a crew of non-professional sailors across 40,000 nautical miles.

This will be Golder’s second time circumnavigating the globe with the Clipper Race, having taken part as Race Crew in the last edition. It marks her first appointment in a professional sailing capacity.

“This will be my first ‘grown-up’ sailing job post-university, pulling together all my part-time sailing jobs completed around my degree,” she said. “I hope to use this as a springboard into the rest of my career as a professional sailor.”

Golder is one of ten First Mates appointed for the 2025–26 edition of the race. The role is central to the functioning of each team, offering vital leadership, training and support throughout the event. First Mates are selected through a rigorous process and must hold the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore qualification, along with substantial sailing experience.

Max Rivers, Deputy Race Director, said: “Our talented First Mates all hold the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore qualification and have plenty of experience to go with it. From Skippering yachts, carrying out deliveries and teaching RYA accredited courses, they have sailed all over the world and come from diverse maritime backgrounds.”

“Their primary role throughout the race is to support the team skipper in all aspects of boat management, meaning this bunch are not only great sailors but also teachers, leaders and mentors for the Race Crew.”

With more than 52,000 nautical miles of sailing behind her, including a full circumnavigation and multiple part-time professional roles, Golder brings a wealth of experience to her new post.

“My last circumnavigation was the best experience ever so far,” she said. “After completing such an amazing challenge, you can feel more confident and hold your head a little higher knowing what you have completed.”

Founded in 1995 by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the Clipper Race is the only event of its kind to train people from all backgrounds to become ocean racers. Each participant completes a minimum of four stages of intensive training before racing in one or more legs of the global route. The full circumnavigation involves six ocean crossings, including the North Pacific, with the fleet of Clipper 70 yachts covering 40,000 nautical miles.

“I am eager to help provide a transformative experience like I had on my race for others,” said Golder. “Mentoring less experienced sailors and sharing my knowledge and passion for sailing to help them develop their skills and confidence. This role is not only an opportunity to contribute to the team but also to continue my personal growth in sailing and leadership.”
