More volunteer police officers are wanted in Surrey to help make the county a safer place.

Around 400 people are currently working as Special Constables, Police Support Volunteers, and Cadet Leaders within their communities.

Surrey Police says they’re looking for people from all backgrounds and walks of life to volunteer.

Helen Hartley, head of volunteering at Surrey Police, said: “We’re looking for new volunteers to join the force throughout the year. I think now more than ever, we're finding that additional support that volunteers bring to our force is really appreciated.

“It helps our officers and staff by freeing up some of their time. We have volunteers in three main areas: our police support volunteers, our special constables that are volunteer police officers, and we also have our volunteer police cadets and their leaders.

“We're looking for volunteers across all three of those areas at the moment. There's a lot of training involved, as you would expect. Volunteers perform the same duties as those officers, so they become an integrated part of the team and they are deployed in the same way that we send out our police officers.”

The force is welcoming volunteers from all backgrounds (from a minimum age of 16).

Volunteers will not be paid, but will be reimbursed for reasonable out-of-pocket travel expenses.
