Armed police in Surrey have shot a man in a village following an "altercation" with a second person.

Surrey Police said that two people were involved in an incident that took place on Nursery Road in the village of Knaphill at 12:36am on Sunday (August 11th).

During the incident, it was reported that one of the men had been armed with a weapon when officers arrived.

It is currently believed that both men who were involved in the initial fight were known to each other.

Armed police arrived on the scene, and one of the men was shot and taken to hospital for medical treatment.

Surrey Police have described the man as being in "a critical but stable condition", as enquiries and investigations get underway.

A weapon was uncovered by officers combing through the scene, as officers looking into the incident follow lines of enquiry.

The force has now referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct following the incident.
