Surrey Police issue warning over ATM distraction thefts
Police in Surrey have issued a warning about ATM distraction thefts, urging people to remain vigilant.
PC Ellis Cox is a local officer in the Runnymede Neighbourhood Policing Team and has been involved in investigating this type of crime:
“These criminals are adept at creating distractions. This could be anything from dropping something to telling you the card machine isn’t working, all designed to avert your attention while an unseen accomplice steals your valuables.
"We know it’s not always easy, but try to be aware of anyone near you when you’re at an ATM. Being aware of your surroundings and not being distracted makes it harder for people to take advantage and less likely that they’ll try to.
"Thieves will watch as you enter your PIN or distract you while you’re withdrawing cash so remember to be vigilant. Cover your PIN and keep an eye on your card at all times. If someone taps you on the shoulder or tries to speak to you, just ignore them.
"When you've left the ATM, put your card away immediately."
One incident in Addlestone saw a victim lose ÂŁ200 in cash.
On 8 March the victim was using the ATM outside Tesco on Station Road, she was approached by a woman who distracted her and took her bank card.
After this a man approached the victim, pretending to offer help but asking for the victim’s personal details and PIN.
Upon realising what had happened the victim went to speak to a security guard inside Tesco.
The suspects withdrew £200 from a nearby ATM using the victim’s card.
Police would like to speak to two people in the footage above in connection with this investigation.
