Surrey Police investigating phone courier scam
A victim in Camberley was targeted.
We are being warned of yet another phone scam over courier fraud as police investigate an incident in Camberley.
Surrey Police say they have received "numerous reports" of callers claiming to be from Hammersmith police force, telling people they need to hang up and call 999.
However, the suspect stays on the line and then informs the victim that their bank account is being investigated for scamming.
The caller then tells the victim that, as part of the investigation, they must draw cash - and leave it in an envelope on their home doorstep for a courier to collect.
They also say any money taken will be reimbursed through a Hammersmith police fund.
The scammer goes on to say if people do not pay, they may have to attend court.
Surrey Police say officers would not do any of this - and they are urging people to make friends and relatives aware of the scam.
With regard to the Camberley incident, a suspected scammer courier was in the town centre near Southwell Park Road at around 4pm last week Friday (18 September).
He is described as a white (tanned) male, of slim build, 19 to 25 years old, and wearing dark clothing.
Police say they are appealing for information or CCTV footage that could help with their investigation.
They can be contacted on 101 - the crime reference number is 45200099472.
