A Surrey man has been jailed for five years after being found guilty of raping a woman in her sleep.

Jay Wilkins, 27, of Horsham Road, Dorking, was sentenced yesterday after a trial at Guildford Crown Court.

He attacked his female victim, who was 23 at the time, at an address in Leatherhead in the early hours of 20 June 2018.

The court head how the victim woke up to find her underwear and leggings pulled down, with Wilkins with his hand around her throat.

She reported Wilkins to police shortly after the offence.

He was arrested by the Metropolitan Police on 28 July 2018 and was found guilty of public order and racially aggravated public order offences, as well as assaulting a police officer.

He was given a 12 week suspended sentence for those offences, but told police about the rape after his arrest. He went on to deny the crime happened, claiming he was under the influence of alcohol and drugs at the time.

Detective Inspector Paddy Mayers, of Surrey Police, said:

“Firstly I would like to acknowledge the courage shown by the victim in coming forward and giving evidence in court.

"She has been through a truly horrific ordeal and I hope that the fact that Wilkins is now in prison will help her to come to terms with what has happened and now be able to leave this terrible ordeal behind her.

"I really appreciate the fact that the jury was able to see through Wilkins' lies.

“The sentence given today was the result of months of hard work by a team of determined and tenacious officers who refused to give up until the offender was brought to justice."
