Surrey and Hampshire residents are being asked for their views on a proposed rise in the amount we pay for policing through our council tax.

For Surrey, a 5.5% increase is being proposed to the policing precept, while for Hampshire it is around 7% for an average band D property.

Surrey PCC David Munro says the money would to help pay for things like extra staff.

Hampshire's PCC Michael Lane says it would be used for things like increasing prevention work including diverting youngsters away from crime.

Both forces have published a survey to find out what people think as well as information on where the money would go.

Surrey's can be found here and Hampshire's here.

David Munro said of the proposed increase: "Together with Surrey’s latest allocation of the government’s 20,000 officers nationally, this would mean the Force could add an extra 150 officers and staff to their establishment over the coming year."

On the survey, Michael Lane said: ""I need your support and your voice to inform my decisions which need to be made early next year. I would like your views on the level of increase in the policing element of the council tax 2021-22.
