Surrey Fire and Rescue Service are encouraging both locals and visitor's to Surrey to take care in and around water this Bank Holiday Weekend.

The force took to Twitter to warn their residents of the dangers of the water.

They released a statement saying:

"With the good weather forecast over the Bank Holiday Weekend we want to remind residents of the dangers of the water! It may look inviting, but even on warm days the water can be cold. Cold water shock can drown even the strongest swimmers in seconds of entering the water!

"In 2021 there were 277 accidental drownings in the UK, 62% of these happened inland – this is a significant change from previous years which has seen most accidental fatalities at the coast. (WAID UK summary for the National Water Safety Forum).

"It is also important to note that in almost half of all drowning cases, the individual had no intention of entering the water, so please also take care when close to the water’s edge or when getting on or off a water craft.

"We want our residents and visitors to Surrey to enjoy the water, but to be aware of the hidden dangers of both the temperature, and unseen hazards under the surface. If you intend to enter the water please only do so at designated sites! You can find out more information around water safety on our website Water safety (Surrey Fire and Rescue) - Surrey County Council (surreycc.gov.uk)

"Remember, if you see someone in trouble in the water call 999 immediately, do not attempt to rescue the person yourself. If you are inland ask for the fire service, if you are at the coast ask for the coastguard."
