An astrophysicist from Surrey has been shot and killed in America by what appears to be a stray bullet.

31-year-old Matthew Wilson, from Chertsey, was visiting loved ones in Atlanta when it happened.

Atlanta police say they responded to several 911 calls about multiple shots being fired from an apartment complex.

When officers arrived, they found Dr Willson lying in his bed with a single gunshot wound to the head.

Police there say the incident appears to be a random act involving people involved in what they describe as "the reckless discharge of a firearm."

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: “We are supporting the family of a British man following his death in the USA and are in contact with US authorities.”
