Surrey County Council has paid tribute to MP Sir David Amess, who was killed last week Friday (15 October) in Leigh-on-Sea during his constituency surgery.

On its website, it said Members and Officers offered "sincere condolences" to his family.

Helyn Clack, Chair of Surrey County Council, said: “Many people across Surrey knew Sir David and recognised his public spirit and steadfast determination to help those people who needed him.

“People like Sir David, who dedicate their lives to public service, should be respected and cherished, and should never feel the threat of violence for doing their best to help others.

“I will be writing to the family of Sir David Amess to offer our sincere condolences for his sad and shocking death.

“There has been some wonderful memories, recordings, and photographs of Sir David and without doubt he was well loved by his constituents, his party and by friends as well, of course, his family.”

Surrey County Council has reissued safety guidance to Members around conducting public advice surgeries and will be talking to members about their security.
