Surrey charity says elderly population are the 'hidden isolated' in local society
Surrey Heath Age Concern say many are struggling to adjust back to normal life after battling the isolation they were forced to deal with in covid times
A Surrey charity wants more people to be aware of the 'hidden isolated' population in the area and check on their neighbours.
Surrey Heath Age Concern say they're services are becoming stretched, as they respond to more and more elderly people struggling with loneliness and lack of confidence.
They say many are struggling to adjust back to normal life after battling the isolation they were forced to deal with in covid times.
Their Charity Manager Sarah Jane Croke - tells us more about the challenges our elderly are going through:
"I have a neighbour who's 93 who was alive during the war and she said at least with the war, you could go out - you could talk to people.
"They'd sit and watch the television and they were frightened and they were scared.
"As we came out of the pandemic, it was like they lost confidence, there was a barrier up, they were scared.
"A lot of people because they weren't out and about, they lost a lot of muscle tone and when you're not talking to people you become really introverted.
"They really struggled and they still do struggle."
Surrey Age Concern run a befriending Service is for the lonely and socially isolated.
They connect people with a volunteer Befriender who will visit to provide companionship to our vulnerable elderly residents on a regular basis.
