Guildford fire and rescue service warn drivers must stop at flashing fire station lights - or face fine
The fire service say drivers are failing to stop across the county
Drivers across Surrey are being warned they must stop when fire station lights flash - or face a fine.
This comes as Guildford Fire and rescue say there is a county-wide issue of drivers failing to obey these lights - which signal an emergency vehicle is trying to leave.
This is leading to fire engines taking longer to respond to serious emergencies.
People across Surrey are therefore being reminded to keep an eye out for these rectangular lights - which resemble the kind you find at a level crossing and flash amber and red when active.
Watch Commander James Neal said: "When we respond to an emergency we need to get there as quickly and as safely as we can - So we turn these lights on to stop other road users so we can exit efficiently.
"By waiting for cars to keep passing, this slows us down and stops us being able to respond to an emergency.
"This happens virtually every time we put these lights on - there's almost always one or two vehicles that continue to drive.
"When you see these lights flashing red you should stop - it is a legal requirement.
"Driving through these lights when they are flashing is exactly the same as driving over a level crossing when the lights are flashing there.
"So this comes with the same risk of getting points and a fine."
