Raheem Sterling has travelled back to the UK after his family home in Surrey was reportedly targeted by robbers.

Surrey Police say officers were called to an address in Oxshott, Leatherhead, after being contacted just before 9pm on Saturday. It had earlier been reported as an armed incident, but police have since confirmed that no threat of violence was involved, and nobody was in the house at the time of the break in.

A number of items were said to have been stolen in the incident, including watchers and jewellery.

Sterling missed England's 3-0 win over Senegal in the last 16 of the World Cup. After last night's game, England manager Gareth Southgate said, "Raheem, as the FA statement says, is having to deal with a family situation, so he's going back to England.

"We've got to give him time to try to resolve that or be there for his family. That's the most important thing at this time, so we're going to give him that space."

It's not yet known whether Sterling will play any further part in the competition.

In a statement, Surrey Police have said, "We are currently investigating a report of a burglary at an address in Oxshott, Leatherhead. Police were contacted just before 9pm on Saturday December 3rd after the occupants of the property came home and discovered a number of items including jewellery and watches had been stolen.

Enquiries to establish the circumstances are underway and the investigation is ongoing. No threat of violence was involved as the items were discovered stolen retrospectively. Enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing."
