Staines councillor resigns
Green Party councillor Adam Gale resigned his seat on Spelthorne Borough Council
Staines residents will head back to the ballot box this autumn after Green Party councillor Adam Gale resigned his seat on Spelthorne Borough Council.
A by-election has been called for Thursday October 16 in the Staines ward, with would-be candidates now invited to put their names in the mix. The polls will be open between 7am-10pm.
The unexpected vacancy means one of Staines’ three seats on the borough council is up for grabs just a year after the last round of local elections. The elected winner will join Cllr Howard Williams (Independent Spelthorne Group) and Malcolm Beecher (Green Party).
“He was a talented guy to lose,” Cllr Beecher lamented to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS). He explained Mr Gale was “upset” to have to step back from the role but he was moving to work abroad. Cllr Beecher added: “Being a councillor from Dubai is a very long commute”.
Campaigning is expected to kick off in the coming weeks with the Green Party hoping to defend their patch and rival parties eyeing up the opportunity.
Nomination papers can be collected from the council during office hours and must be signed by local electors in the ward.
