Shops in Surrey are being asked not to sell eggs and flour to children during Halloween in a bid to minimise anti-social behaviour.

The county's police force has begun issuing signs to retailers saying that under-18s won't be served if they try and buy them.

Officers said they were working with local businesses "to ensure responsible trading" and avoid large quantities falling into the hands of those who will use them to damage property.

Surrey Police's anti-social behaviour manager, Jo Grimshaw, said: "We want people to enjoy themselves safely but Halloween does not legitimise bad behaviour or vandalism and people need to consider how their actions can affect others.

"Officers will be carrying out high visibility patrols over the coming weeks and taking appropriate action against any anti-social behaviour.

"Causing damage to someone's property could result in an on-the-spot fine or an arrest so act responsibly and everyone will enjoy Halloween."
