Surrey Police search for good samaritan who helped save two toddlers from River Thames
The children accidentally entered the water while in their pushchair
Surrey Police are searching for the good samaritan who leaped into the River Thames to help rescue two toddlers from the water.
On Sunday (16 July) a grandmother had taken her two grandsons, aged one and two, for a walk to the River Thames in Staines near Halfords on The Causeway.
What happened next was described by police as a 'near tragic incident'.
The boys were strapped into a pushchair but on the riverbank, it began to roll towards the water as the brake had accidentally not been applied properly.
The pushchair fell into the river leaving the boys submerged by the water.
The woman immediately jumped into the water shouting for help and tried to bring the buggy to the surface, but she struggled due to the depth of the water and the steep bank.
A man who was nearby sprang into action entering the water to help the woman with the buggy.
Not long after a second man named Paul who had heard the shouts ran to the scene and helped pull the buggy up the riverbank, getting the two children out of the water.
He also found blankets to keep the children warm and dry before Surrey Police arrived at the river.
Officers say both children were taken to hospital but are now back home and in good health.
In a post on Facebook Surrey Police said:
"The family are so grateful to both men for their speedy reactions and heroic efforts.
"The family have been in touch with Paul but would also like to thank the first man who leapt into the water; if you are the person who helped, please get in touch by dropping us a private message and quoting ref 45210076472"
