Face masks reintroduced at Royal Surrey’s A&E to prevent infection spread
Temporary mask-wearing policy and flu vaccine advice announced
Royal Surrey’s Emergency Department (A&E) has asked patients and visitors to wear surgical face masks as cases of flu and other respiratory infections increase across the country.
The hospital says this extra precaution will help reduce the spread of infection within the department and keep patients, relatives, and staff safe. Masks can be collected at the entrance of the department for those who need them.
Mask-wearing exemptions and updates
If you are unable to wear a face mask, Royal Surrey advises informing a member of staff upon arrival to the Emergency Department.
Hospital representatives have emphasised this is a temporary measure. Updates will be shared once their usual face mask guidance is reinstated.
Flu vaccine advice for those at higher risk
Royal Surrey is also encouraging those at higher risk of serious illness from flu to get vaccinated, particularly during winter.
The free NHS flu vaccine is available to eligible individuals, including people aged 65 or over (including those turning 65 by 31st March 2026), those with specific long-term health conditions, people who are pregnant, and those living in a care home.
It is also available to carers of older or disabled individuals, those receiving a carer’s allowance, and people living with someone who has a weakened immune system.
How to get the flu vaccine
Free NHS flu vaccinations can be booked through your GP surgery, via online booking on pharmacies or the NHS App if you are aged 18 or over, or by walking into a pharmacy offering NHS flu vaccinations without the need for an appointment.
The final day to get vaccinated is 31st March 2026, but Royal Surrey advises booking sooner to ensure protection during the peak winter months. Online booking will close on 30th March 2026.
