A local Surrey rugby club will host a women's premiership cup rugby match in order to help shine a light on the grassroots game.

Cobham Rugby Club is hosting Harlequins vs Exeter Chiefs in a Premiership Women’s Rugby Cup pool stage fixture at 3pm.

On the Harlequins website, it says that: "This is an opportunity to showcase the pathway into the elite game and allow a new audience to access women’s club rugby at the start of the 2025/26 season".

Before the game there will be training sessions put on by the Harlequins community coaches and before the game kicks off, there will be a guard of honour that young people can get involved with.

Matt Lunn is the Chairman of Youth Rugby at Cobham Rugby Club, he says the timing of this match is perfect.

"It's a really good time for a couple of things. Firstly it's the start of the season, so we've started pre-season both in the girls and the boys. So it's a real stimulus to get people back down to the club and remind themselves of what fun they have when they come and play.

Secondly, it highlights the Women's World Cup. So the timing is perfect to try and grow the game, get more girls to come down and play and just get a few more people on the ground running around playing rugby."

He added that after the game there will be plenty of time for fans to talk to the players.

"Generally those sort of players that come to the club are very, very happy to talk to younger players and spend some time with them and their parents. Talk about their journey, their career.

They interact really, really well with the crowd, so there should be lots of opportunities to to speak with them."

The game comes the day after the Women's Rugby World Cup kicks off, Matt says that this is a fantastic time to get invested in the sport

"I think now's a really good chance for people that haven't really followed the female game to sit up and watch it. It's a great standard and right now England have got a really, really solid settled squad.

It's great to hear the young girls, shout out their favourite players, and it's definitely on the turn and on the rise.

I've just seen the quality and the product go through the roof. It's really exciting, it's really good skill level, it's really fast. So it's it's got a really genuine audience now because of the quality of the product."
