New measures to tackle antisocial behaviour in Woking
It comes after persistent complaints of drinking and drug taking in the town centre
Woking Borough Council has brought in new powers to tackle antisocial behaviour in the town centre.
It comes amid concerns about both binge drinking and substance abuse in Woking, in particular the use of psychoactive substances such as nitrous oxide.
The council has now adopted a Public Space Protection Order following a public consultation.
It gives council officers the powers to challenge and fine people causing trouble in the centre of town, with persistent offenders facing a penalty of up to £1000.
The council says the order doesn't prevent people drinking responsibly in designated areas.
Cllr Debbie Harlow, from Woking Borough Council, said:
“Whilst Woking is generally a safe place to live and work, like all towns and cities across the country, our town centre can at times be affected by anti-social behaviour.
“The introduction of the Public Spaces Protection Order enhances our existing range of measures already used to tackle antisocial behaviour, helping to create a safe and welcoming town centre.
“It provides police with additional powers to deal with nuisance or persistent antisocial behaviour and act as a deterrent, which will have a positive effect on the community’s quality of life.
"These new powers won’t resolve all antisocial behaviour in the town centre, but it will help the council and police tackle the most persistent, unreasonable and impactful antisocial behaviour.”
The order will be in place for three years, after which it will be reviewed.
