New data reveals a Surrey council has over £20,000 of debt per resident
New data was released this morning detailing council debt around the UK
Data has been released this morning detailing levels of debt for local authorities around the country.
The data shows local authorities across the country added £7.8bn to their growing debt pile in the space of a year.
However none added more debt than Surrey County Council, over the course of the last twelve months, they added £346,584,000 to their debt.
A spokesperson for the council says "costs of all the key services are rising, and there is more to do to set a balanced budget next year."
Meanwhile three Surrey councils feature in the top ten for most debt per person, including Woking topping that list.
Woking Borough Council have £20,601.33 of debt per resident, more than double of what the next council has, which happens to be Spelthorne with just over £10,000 per person.
Runnymede also features in the top ten with £6,608.79 of debt per head.
