Mole Valley District Council is set to consider a bold new Climate Change Action Plan for 2025/26, continuing its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030. The proposed plan will be discussed at upcoming Scrutiny and Cabinet meetings on June 3 and June 17, 2025.

Key initiatives in the proposed plan include:

  • Improving energy efficiency in temporary accommodation through heating upgrades and insulation.
  • Prioritising high-energy-use council buildings for decarbonisation to maximise carbon and cost savings.
  • Installing solar carports at Leatherhead Leisure Centre.
  • Expanding outreach efforts to mobilise residents, communities, and businesses around climate action.

Councillor Claire Malcolmson, Cabinet Member for Climate Change, welcomed the ongoing progress but stressed that continued momentum is vital.

“Positive strides have been made, but there is much more to be done,” said Cllr Malcolmson. “Our new Sustainable Mole Valley website is a fantastic showcase of what we’ve achieved, and we want the community to be part of this journey by sharing their own sustainability stories.”

She highlighted the updated carbon footprint model as a major step forward in accurately tracking emissions. While the newly reported figures are higher, this reflects improved methodology rather than an actual rise in emissions.

“This updated model includes previously unmeasured sources, giving us a much clearer picture of our operational footprint,” she explained. “With buildings and supply chains accounting for the majority of our emissions, those areas will be a major focus in the year ahead.”

Full details of the 2025/26 Climate Change Action Plan and the 10 priority actions are available on the MVDC website.
