A man has been arrested after some 35 trees were cut down across parts of Surrey.

Police were first alerted on 21 March after residents in Elmbridge and parts of Spelthorne noticed that a number of trees had been chopped down overnight.

It continued throughout the past month, with some trees being left across roads, causing disruption.

Surrey Police praised residents who contacted them with information, allowing officers to identify a vehicle they believed to be connected to the investigation.

Last night (22 April), the vehicle was stopped. Searches were carried out in the suspect’s car and home address - and several chainsaws and wood chippings were found.

The 24 year old suspect, from Weybridge, has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and going equipped, and remains in custody.

Inspector Bert Dean, Borough Commander for Elmbridge said "This is an encouraging development in this investigation. We continue to piece together the evidence we have. Thank you again to the local community for their ongoing patience and support."
