Large police presence at Surrey mosque
There were reports on social media that the Shah Jahan Mosque would be targeted
A large police presence was seen at the UK's oldest purpose-built mosque in Surrey following reports there was going to be disorder there.
Surrey Police say they were made aware of reports circulating on social media that the Shah Jahan Mosque in Woking was going to be targeted on Monday (5 August).
In a post on social media the force said that they didn't see any disorder taking place:
"At this time, we have not seen any disorder taking place at the location, or in the surrounding area, but we will maintain a strong visible policing presence in the area throughout the evening, and our officers will continue to engage with those local communities who have been feeling vulnerable since we first saw the increase in violent disorder across the country following the tragic events in Southport last week.
"We recognise that this is a really challenging time for these communities, and we have increased our visibility and engagement where we know that residents, businesses, and faith leaders are feeling vulnerable, and will continue to support and reassure those who may be concerned for their safety.
"This policing response demonstrates that we are continually monitoring the situation and the information we receive, and that our priority is ensuring that our communities feel safe and supported by us."
The Home Office has brought in urgent measures to make sure mosques were offered extra protection so any threats of more attacks on places of worship could be responded to quickly.
One week since three children were stabbed to death in Southport, more than 370 arrests have been made so far following violent disorder across the country.
