A reminder you need to book a slot

If you live in Hampshire, and are having a Spring clean this Easter - don't forget you need to book your visit to the tip.

With the bank holiday weekend traditionally a time of year for home clear outs, the county council is reminding us that bookings are limited to one slot a week.

From today, the 24 Household Waste and Recycling Centres in the county are now open for longer - from 9am to 6pm every day right through all of the summer months.

A wide range of household items can be recycled or disposed of - find out more here: hants.gov.uk/wasteandrecycling/recyclingcentres/householdwaste

For some items such as furniture, residents could instead consider storing the items until the HWRC reuse areas are open again, or look to use sites such as Gumtree, Freegle and Facebay to ensure that any items which can be, are reused rather than disposed of.

Kerbside collections, provided by residents' local councils, are also the place to recycle all dry recyclables such as paper, plastic bottles and cans.

To make a booking:

Bookings can be made online at hants.gov.uk/wasteandrecycling/recyclingcentres/book-appointment

Telephone bookings, for those without internet access, can be made by calling?0300 555 1389.

Bookings can be made in advance up to one week before the intended visit. Residents will need to provide their name, car registration and, for online bookings, an email address.

Bookings are currently limited to one slot per household per week (while social distancing guidelines remain in place).

Cancellation:

Use the link in the confirmation e-mail to cancel a booking if necessary.

You can also amend your booking to another time if you need to.

Further advice:

Residents are asked to ensure they have a confirmed booking before they travel to an HWRC, as anyone turning up without a confirmed booking will not be allowed entry to the site.

Visitors to the HWRCs should also be aware that:

There is no need to bring confirmation of the booking to the site, the site will have information on confirmed bookings

Site staff will check registration plates upon arrival - people will need to arrive in the vehicle specified in the booking

Trailers are not permitted at four HWRCs due to space restrictions caused by social distancing - Alresford, Bordon, Hayling Island and Netley

As per government guidelines, residents in the specified vulnerable category (those who are clinically extremely vulnerable, people over 70 and pregnant women) are advised not to visit a site

New parking arrangements are in place with site staff guiding vehicles, from a safe distance, into spaces

As far as possible, only one person per household should visit the HWRC and exit the vehicle

Owing to social distancing measures, site staff will be unable to provide any assistance with unloading material or carrying material. Residents are asked to bring only the amount of waste they can comfortably carry and empty into the containers where possible

Everyone must keep at least a two-metre distance from others at all times.

Most household waste materials will be accepted, except for chargeable trade waste. Please note that chemically treated railway sleepers (e.g. from garden structures) are no longer accepted

Residents can also contact their borough, city or district council to arrange a collection, although there may be a charge

Reuse sales areas will remain closed until at least 12 April, in line with Government guidelines on non-essential retail

To reduce time onsite, residents are encouraged to separate their waste in advance, as far as possible, so materials can be placed directly into the correct bins. Care should be taken to ensure that there are no hidden dangers within the item, such as batteries or other hazardous items which could cause a fire risk.
