A new £500,000 fund has been launched to help reduce deaths and injuries on roads across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones announced the Emerging Needs Fund, which is now open for applications from partners, campaign groups and organisations keen to improve road safety in the region.

Road safety is one of Donna Jones’s top priorities, and the fund aims to support practical projects including speed indicator signs, community speedwatch kit and other measures that promote safer roads for everyone, from pedestrians and cyclists to motorists and horse riders.

“It's an issue that affects us all – from pedestrians, to cyclists, horse riders and motorists,” Donna Jones said. “This is an opportunity for partners, campaign groups and organisations to bid for funding for things like speed indicator signs; happy or sad digital road signs; kit for community speedwatch schemes etc. There are lots of things we can fund to help improve our roads.”

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary have been tackling speeding and anti-social behaviour behind the wheel. In July, a month-long road safety operation revealed more than 700 offences known as ‘Fatal Four’, including 201 tickets for speeding, 71 for mobile phone use while driving, and 142 for not wearing seatbelts. A further 184 arrests were made for drug driving and 138 for drink driving.

Groups can apply for up to £20,000 for projects that promote safer roads and support victims. The application window closes at 3pm on 28th November 2025, with successful bids to be announced at the end of February 2026.

Police Commissioner Donna Jones said she hopes this new round of funding will encourage communities to work together to deliver safer roads: “What is clear is that one person’s actions behind the wheel can have a devastating impact in a split second. That’s why I’ll continue to work with officers and communities to ensure we deliver safer roads across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.”
