The Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities Rt Hon Michael Gove MP has approved Guildford Borough Council’s plans for a new regeneration.

Weyside Urban Village is planned to open up a mile of riverside and provide 1500 homes for the town.

The proposal that has been approved will see several allotments at Bellfields Road relocated to a new site known as North Moors to an extension of existing allotments at Aldershot Road.

The council have been hoping to relocate the allotments to build on the site over the past decade, with the concept being included in the Council’s Local Plan in 2019.

Guildford Borough Council’s flagship regeneration scheme is hoped to provide affordable housing, as well as a mix of homes to buy and rent.

Lead Councillor for Regeneration, Cllr John Rigg, said:

“It is a project which Guildford can be very proud of. It is about brownfield and regeneration and new homes, taking an area which is currently rather unattractive and making it something special.

“So I think we are very pleased to get through this landmark of the Secretary of State approving the project.”

The scheme is aiming to help the council meet their housing target, as well as promoting active travel through a sustainable movement corridor.

It is hoping to be completed by early 2030.
