Do not leave rubbish next to clothes banks...or you could face prosecution for flytipping.

That from Rushmoor Borough Council, after a Farnborough man who did just that, coughed up £200 for a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN).

Following a complaint by a member of the public community patrol officers investigated on 4 May.

They found evidence in the form of bank statements and boxes of medication linking the fly-tip in Cherrywood Road with the resident.

The man claimed he had dumped the two bags of rubbish because he had trouble booking a household waste slot and was moving house.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, paid the FPN rather than face prosecution under section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

Rushmoor Borough Council's Cabinet member for Operational Services, Councillor Maurice Sheehan, said: "There is absolutely no excuse for fly-tipping which brings so much misery to so many people.

"We are fully committed to taking a hard line with offenders and we will seek to take formal action.

"Residents who choose to fly-tip can expect expensive FPNs or a day in court.

"It costs us and council taxpayers a great deal of money to keep on top of fly-tipping, and we will to what we can to prevent it - including by firm enforcement."

Residents can report fly tipping by calling the council on 01252 398399 or online at www.rushmoor.gov.uk/flytipping
