Fleet Road will remain pedestrianised for a further month.

Hart District Council voted to continue with the COVID-19 temporary closure of Fleet Road at a council meeting on Thursday, September 24.

However, this is dependent on the results of further engagement with businesses and residents and analysis of traffic data.

That feedback will be used by councillors to take a decision on if the pedestrianisation scheme should stay in place beyond October.

A number of new features are being installed to help people enjoy the traffic-free space, starting last week with new planters. Other measures include spaces allocated for temporary market stalls and outdoor seating areas.

Following COVID-19 guidance, two craft markets and a vegan market have already been held in the traffic-free space and on Saturday Fleet BID has arranged free crazy golf following social distancing rules.

Graham Cockarill, Cabinet member for Economic Development at Hart District Council, said: “With the threat of a second wave of coronavirus, it is important we do all we can to protect public health and help prevent the spread. The scheme promotes social distancing and gives visitors more confidence that they can safely shop in Fleet.

“We understand the concerns around the scheme which is why it is monitored regularly through traffic data, retailer and shopper surveys and feedback from residents. This will be used to assess the effectiveness of the closure.

“Whilst we recognise that these measures may cause temporary inconvenience for some, our priority is to ensure the safety of all residents and support the economic recovery of Hart.” Crackdown.

The measures were introduced on 24 August 2020, closing Fleet Road to through traffic between Victoria Road/Upper Street and Church Road. The scheme was set up to promote social distancing, support local businesses and enhance the visitor experience in the town centre. It is supported by Hampshire County Council, Fleet Town Council and Fleet BID.
