Surrey firefighters help London Fire Brigade battle huge blaze in River Thames

It broke out on an island in Hampton

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service have been helping the London Fire Brigade after a large blaze broke out on an island in the River Thames.

SFRS sent two fire engines to the scene - in total around 100 crew fought the flames which tore through two single storey industrial units at Platt's Eyot in Hampton in Richmond-upon-Thames yesterday.

With no road access, equipment had to be carried by hand over a foot bridge.

Residents nearby were advised to close doors and windows.

It is reported a boat used in the Dunkirk evacuations in the Second World War was destroyed.

One man was treated for smoke inhalation.
