Fire extinguished after flames tear through Hankley Common near Elstead
At one stage 14 fire vehicles were fighting the blaze
Firefighters have been damping down after a large blaze broke out yesterday afternoon on Hankley Common near Elstead.
Crews were called to the area, which is owned by the Ministry of Defence, at around 3pm yesterday (12 April).
Surrey Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) were assisted by the Ministry of Defence and Hampshire Fire and Rescue. Service
SFRS tweeted that, at one point, 14 fire and rescue service vehicles were fighting the flames.
Surrey Police had to ask people to stay away as onlookers arrived. In a tweet they said:
"Officers are reporting spectators turning up - putting themselves, and the emergency services, in danger if the fire spreads."
Surrey Fire and Rescue tweeted last night that they had managed to contain around 10 hectares of burning undergrowth and trees.
