Neigh-tivity! Therapy ponies visit Surrey care home
Residents enjoyed a very festive visit
Residents at a care home in Surrey have had some very special visitors to spread festive cheer.
The Royal Alfred Seafarers’ Society at Belvedere House in Banstead played host to several therapy ponies.
The ponies, visiting from Kingswood Shetlands and Friends, are part of an animal therapy programme designed to reduce anxiety and improve communication skills in older people.
According to the mental health charity, Mind, being around animals can have many positive effects, including reducing stress and improving one's mood.
The Alzheimer's Society explains that animal-assisted interventions can enhance self-esteem and confidence in people with dementia, promoting quality of life and encouraging independence.
David Dominy, CEO of The Royal Alfred Seafarers’ Society, said: "Having the Christmas ponies visit us is one of the highlights of our activity calendar; the residents get so much joy from being around them. Within the environment designed for our residents, we aim to provide a serene retreat while bringing activities to them and offering a variety of trips throughout the year. Christmas is particularly important to support those in our care celebrate with their loved ones and friends.”
“Our dedicated and experienced team walk with those in our care to maximise their independence while supporting their needs in our welcoming, safe haven.
"Our events aim to ensure that everyone can participate in the festive season in an environment designed for them so that they can swap stories, enjoy friendships and spend time with their loved ones while continuing to receive the highest level of care.
"We look forward to celebrating Christmas and the New Year in our freshly renovated home and want to thank all our supporters, trustees, family, and friends."
Belvedere House provides housing, residential and nursing care to former seafarers, widows, and dependants.
