A youth choir from Farnham will make the trip to New Zealand in July, as it hopes to add another competition win to its list of awards.

Thirty-five singers from Farnham will travel to Auckland to compete in the games, alongside 11,000 singers from across the world.

Melanie Hancox, the choir’s chair of trustees said the group is nervous to make the 11,000 mile journey but, “for lots of them it is a trip of a lifetime”, she told Hits Radio.

The choir is no stranger to winning awards, having won a string of accolades, most recently winning two gold medals at the European Choir Games in Sweden in 2019.

As the only choir representing the UK at the games, Melanie says she hopes the group can “fly the flag” in celebrating young people in music.

Melanie says the choir is a "safe space" for many of the young people who attend, and is often the "highlight of their week", especially during challenges at school. She hopes the competition will help encourage more people to join the choir, which already has over 100 singers.

The competition gets underway in Auckland, New Zealand in July.
